WEST UNION, Ohio (WKRC) - The Ohio SPCA removed seven surviving horses and one dead horse from a property in West Union, Ohio on Saturday.

The Ohio SPCA was contacted by a humane officer of the Humane Society of Adams County on a request to help with a large number of horses in an animal cruelty investigation.

A warrant was obtained in order to seize the horses and the owner will be charged with animal cruelty.

All of the surviving horses were examined by a veterinarian, who found their "body scores" to be below normal. Some of the horses were said to have very little fat or muscle.

"There appears to (be) no explanation for the emaciation other than a lack of adequate nutrition," according to the report from the Ohio SPCA.

"Large animals are costly to rehabilitate. We need the help of a caring public. Those wanting to help provide medical care and feed can donate online at OhioSPCA.org or mail donations to Ohio SPCA, P.O. Box 546, Grove City, OH 43123," the Ohio SPCA said.
